As part of the Connected Cluster, we visited Endeavour School at Flagstaff - 'a designer built' modern learning environment.
Our introduction by leadership outlined the main ideas of a modern learning environment -
- it provides flexible management and use of space, teaching staff, timetables and equipment.
- it provides a collaborative teaching and learning environment.
- it enables programmes to be learner directed which encourages student engagement.
- it provides opportunities for children to be involved in meaningful learning experiences.
- it is based on research by experts - Mark Treadwell (The Paradigm Shift), Cheryl Doig (Learner Agency), Nathan Mikaere-Wallace (Brain Development and Learning).
In the follow-up discussions with staff they outlined the advantages of MLE -
- it allows for more flexible use of instructional time with students.
- it allows teachers to know more students, and to know more about these students.
- it promotes constructive reflective practice amongst the teachers involved in the collaborative learning and teaching programme.
- it utilises strengths and abilities within a teaching team enabling a differentiated and effective approach to the range of learners in a group.
