Restoring balance Zoom hui 6

NZ Maths is a great starting point. Good balance.

1. Maths Proficiencies - (Maths practices)

The Learner First slide 5 proficiencies. If students don’t have these they will need to keep revisiting until achieved

.

The School Curriculum slide

Productive disposition

Conceptual Understanding

Procedural fluency and Conceptual understanding

build in reasoning.

TEacher planning - am I planning to access those proficiencies? Not just basic fact practice.

supports mixed ability grouping

2. IDeas & Elaborations - 2nd tier

  gives us success criteria

Build a working knowledge of … slide

NZMaths - curriculum elaborations- visible benchmarks as assessment capabilities

KEy ideas - can support differentiation over 2 years - when kids are falling behind what is the need to know, the big idea that kids need to know.  Number strategies.shows - What is the need to know! A lot simpler than you think. Teach the ‘need to know’ to lift target students up through levels

Slide- deeper understanding the key ideas and elaborations slides- will email-Vision of Instructional Practice and Peter Sullivan reading-Open ended problems

3. Types of Problems

JO Bolar - can’t keep giving them the same thing. Got to keep moving them on rewording. Give kids new unfamiliar work to move them on. Most often too much time spent on practising known. Too long on exercises.

NZ Maths/ENrich lots of examples of all 4 types of problems. Reasoning and Problem solving

Peter Sullivan books - Open-Ended Problem Solving - explore summarise and connect

Have I given my students a range of rich and meaningful tasks?

Unfamiliar range from 2 step …..  To

Assessment - Essential that all 4 problem types have been covered. Raise awareness and move towards student centred learning

4. Ideas for Planning

NZ Maths - Planning - Long Term Plans - are sequenced mathematically.

Can do through Inquiry … through sequenced sessions

Allows flexibility with elaborations …

Rich Learning tasks - powerful and unfamiliar. GIves a link to

procedural and conceptual prerequisites.

Opportunities to teach prerequisite skills for success

examples of procedural and conceptual given.

At home kits shows a strong balance in types of PRoblems

Important to plan for opportunities to explicitly teach and explore or extend

5 Rapid routines

Engaging activities that support the learning of basic facts

Engaging is not drills. Structured and purposeful activities.

Scatter strand routine tasks throughout the term. Shapes

Front loading with Warm ups the term before.

THe LEarner First facebook page - teachers sharing resources

Rapidroutine - fluency, revisiting elaborations and key ideas level below  5mins

Going back a level to create quick routine. To keep previously learnt skills forefront and alive.

Justify Defend and choose an appropriate strategy.

Reasoning - choose one question where the kids have time to communicate and explain - defend justify and prove

THe moveNprove game - video on facebook group. Talk moves used

A Maths Week example - flexibility

6. Assessment

Learning progressions - example Bruce Moody--... slide end level 3 reasoning…

Where Next?

Facebook page Ministry hui links to share. Staff PL session

Exploring - Intellectual engagement John Hattie. Inquiry open ended task. Teach first explicit task then send away with challenge to explore. Putting an example on facebook site tomorrow.

Retaining number facts  - template. If I give you one fact then you can make 4 facts.

Problems - If I know then I know. Share with team/staff?

New curric to come out next year.

Extend and enable -HOW

Explicit teaching is not about differentiation of groups only
