Maths Community Workshop 1
'The best teachers don't give you the answers...
They just point the way...
And let you make your own choices."
Good Teacher Magazine
Working with groups within a group is a challenge we all experience with large numbers and ranges of children.
Maths Language, giving children the correct terminology and expecting them to use it. Providing more opportunities for student voice and looking for ways to actively encourage those not participating is the next challenge. Ensuring oral language development by building on their vocabulary.
Are you a leader or a follower? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeXvppWv8YA
Clip discusses the vital role of the first follower, without whom there would be no group. Apply this to a class of children. Can you identify the leader/s, first followers and followers.
Carol Dweck - Growth Mindset
Fleas and the lid
A short clip that looks at how the limitations put on fleas creates their learned behaviour. A discussion on how this applies to the expectations we have for our students. We read an article by Carol Dweck on Growth Mindset. "Because they believed that their intellect could be developed, students with a growth mind-set focused on learning, believed in effort, and were resilient in the face of setbacks".
We were then challenged with some alternative geometric activities and how they could be applied in our classes. Exploring maths through folding shapes. Providing opportunities for children to make connections and comparisons, being able to talk about properties, their findings and use 'Maths Language'
