Te Timatanga


Kingi Taawhiao c- 1825-1894 - Kirikiriroa got its name from his statement “I cross the smooth belly of Kirikiriroa. It's garden bursting with the fullness of good things”.  “I whakawhiti atu ai te kopu mania o Kirikiriroa, me ona maara kai te ngawha whakatupu ake o te whenua momona.”


King Taawhiao came to mourn over the burial ground that was destroyed with the development of Grey St.


Kameta Te Tuhi last surviving member of Kirikiriroa Pa who saw the conflict during the land wars of 1863, and was part of the resettlement to Hukanui 
Marae. Wiremu’s grandmother.  Land just taken by Governor Grey and given to settlers. Maori from here fought in the war, as a consequence, they lost the most land.

-Jubilee bush - Te Papanui forest was an existing block. The name needs to be changed, Claudelands?


Upokororo - extinct fish that gathered around the swamps that were here. Old people would say it was because the land was cursed. Trout were introduced.


Miropiko Pou - digger had fallen into the hole that had been dug for the placement of the pou. His father had chosen the spot and in the subsoil they discovered evidence of a historic single post pou. About 85 men were used to carry the pou to its new site. Ngati Haiere are a sub-clan of Miropiko pa. There were 9 sub tribes along the banks of the Waikato. The greenstone taonga was recovered near the site of the Fairfield bridge. Now on display in the Auckland Museum. It is depicted on the pou at Miropiko. 68.8 cm in length. Found in the gully system behind Woodstock school. Miropiko, named from the crooked needle tree.


Nga Taonga tuku iho o Ngati Wairere - double sided hei tiki recovered from old Pa named Opoia in Claudelands. It travelled as part of the famous Te Maori Exhibition which travelled to New York.


Whatanoa Gateway Waikato Stadium. Two greatest warriors are depicted atop of the gateway - Haanui of Ngati Wairere and Hotumaeuea of Ngati Koura. Warrior spirit.
Whatanoa Gateway is named after an old Pa site near the stadium which was destroyed in 1945. Also the site of an ancient urupa.


Most Pa are built on headlands because of the gully defence, spring water and rivers nearby.

Taro crop grown inside Te Parapara is believed to be an old variety brought on board the Tainui Waka planted by Hoturoa and Whakaotirangi at Hawaiki iti Aotea Harbour.
